2018: The Great Year for LaunchLab

The year 2018 has been a good one for the LaunchLab. This was evident at the LaunchLab Business Mixer event. The event was designed to connect the LaunchLab community with the broader local business community. It was also an opportunity to acknowledge and recognise some achievements by LaunchLab and its startups. The event was attended by local business community leaders and some national government officials within the innovation space. The LaunchLab Business Mixer was also graced by the presence of Kieno Kammies, the presenter of the Cape Talk Breakfast show.

2018 Great Performers

LaunchLab CEO, Philip Marais,  highlighted some of the notable achievements by LaunchLab during 2018. One that highlighted the impact of the LaunchLab is the fact that in 2018 LaunchLab was named by the University Business Incubator Global (UBI) as the Top Challenger from Africa. UBI Global was founded in 2013 in Stockholm, Sweden to identify where all the innovation hubs are located worldwide and to learn and share what makes them successful. This recognition sets LaunchLab apart from the rest locally and indicates that it is an important player in the innovation space within the continent.

The startups at the LaunchLab are a testimony of the fact that the incubator is one of the best to enable innovation. These startups were recognised during the 2018 Business Mixer event.

Bridgiot was named the Top university spinout. Bridgiot is a startup that was co-founded by Prof. Thinus Booysen. The Bridgiot technology creates awareness of possible water wasting and empowers users to prevent or reduce the wasting of water as well as allowing online presence for some water meters that are currently operating in an off-line standalone mode. During the drought season in Cape Town Bridgiot became a life saver for a number of institutions in the Western Cape.

Other startups that were recognised at the Business Mixer event were StellieTech for being the best student founded startup and Vollar as the best new comer.

Business Mixer – A Step in the Door to 2019 Business

The Business Mixer event enabled the LaunchLab startups to be introduced to local business leaders and community. Relationships forged during the 2018 Business Mixer could serve as a stepping stone in 2019 for some LaunchLab startups as some businesses showed interest in doing further business with them in the future.
