Vacancy: Food Science & Technology Consultant

Stellenbosch University LaunchLab is seeking a passionate, mission-driven, experienced, self-starter to join its team in a consulting capacity with the opportunity to transition to a full-time role based on exemplary performance. The role is a unique opportunity to help us build Africa’s leading Food Science & Technology Incubator by leveraging the numerous, incredible resources in and around Stellenbosch University as well as the local community. 

 

The ideal candidate will have deep technical as well as business experience in the Food Industry and a track record of leading projects from start to finish with excellent deliverables and minimal oversight. A Bachelors or Masters of Science degree across various food-related academic backgrounds and/or a business degree (MBA preferred) with real-world experience in the food industry is a must. The candidate should also have experience working, advising or directly running a startup venture.

Position: Food Science & Technology Consultant 

Output: Market Scoping, Strategy & Implementation Analysis of potential Incubator 

Hours: 50-60 hours over an 8 week period 

Rate: [TBD]

Timing: 1 April start date 

 

Goal

To create Africa’s leading Food Science & Technology Incubator focused on building food and beverage products, services and technologies that drive positive change in the global food system.

 

Project scope:

  • Create a strategic plan for SU LaunchLab’s food-tech incubator, including:
    • Incubator vision and mission
    • Operational team structure
    • Business model  
    • Cohort values and entrepreneur parameters 
    • Pipeline, recruitment, and selection process
    • Program content outline: curriculum, mentors and experts
    • Marketing and sales opportunities
    • Events
    • Post-program support
  • Develop a platform to collaborate with the University and leverage its talent, expertise, and IP to bring products and services to market
  • Build relationships with industry and determine strategic and financial corporate partnership opportunities 
  • Devise incubator implementation process

  • Strategic Plan Document 
  • University platform proposal
  • Corporate partnership proposal
  • Implementation plan

 

Estimated hours:

  • Strategic plan development: [TBD] hours

  • Total: 50 – 60 hours over 8 weeks 

 

Qualifications & Skill Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience in the food industry whether in production, distribution, management consulting or business required 
  • Experience working, advising or directly running a startup venture 
  • BSc, MSc, MBA or similar designations preferred
  • Strong quantitative and analytical competency
  • Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a proven track record of building catalytic partnerships
  • Comfort dealing with ambiguity and the ability to work independently
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
