About the Role
SU LaunchLab is a business incubator and catalyses entrepreneurship on campus and across Africa by providing an entrepreneur-friendly environment along with a world-class infrastructure, networking opportunities, mentoring and working space for aspiring entrepreneurs. Our Mission is to transform seemingly impossible into world-shaping.
The current cohort of SU LaunchLab companies includes 4 focused on biotech solutions for global problems. These early-stage ventures have exciting technology borne from extensive research within the University. SU LaunchLab is assisting them in searching for a viable business model so they may create sustainable businesses.
Biotech ideas & research generally take a good bit of time to locate product-market-fit due to their complexity, regulatory hurdles and other factors. Therefore, non-dilutive grant funding is critical to increase their funding runway and achieve ultimate success. SU LaunchLab is seeking an experienced, passionate, eager professional to own the process of mapping the biotech grant landscape and either assisting or owning the writing of applicable grants. The Fellow will have an opportunity to work closely with not only the SU LaunchLab Team but also with 4 exciting biotech startups. The 8-week Fellowship could lead to a longer-term engagement based on performance as well as significant remuneration structured as a ‘pay-for-success’ arrangement.

Who: Open to all (does not need to be associated with Stellenbosch University)
What: 8-week Fellowship working directly on the SU LaunchLab Global Team
How: 4-6 hours per week
Skills Needed: Curious, eager, self-starter looking to learn & grow within entrepreneurism. Experience in biotechnology, fundraising or grant writing a plus
Compensation: R2,000 per month stipend. Potential long-term consulting engagement based on performance. Potential revenue-sharing arrangement for grants written & awarded
Necessary Skills
- Curious, self-starter with a passion for early-stage ventures
- Excellent writing skills with experience in branding & storytelling
- Experience in grant writing or fundraising highly regarded
- Technical background in sciences appreciated but not required
Statement of Work
- Global grant funding landscape analysis focused on biotechnology
- Summary of > 3 grants that are applicable for SU LaunchLab companies
- Assistance or ownership in preparation and submission of >3 grant proposals
The fellowship offers an incredible opportunity for a talented, hard-working, self-starter to join the SU LaunchLab team for 2 months. This will provide an excellent ‘startup’ experience and could lead to a longer-term contract.
